Big Stax XVII 500 (Day 2): Few Through The Cracks

Level 16 (Blinds 2,500/5,000/500)
Total Big Stax XVII 500 Entries: 1,192

Total Players Remaining: 216
Chip Average: 220,000

Throughout every Big Stax starting flight, we try to highlight and feature as many players as possible. Sometimes, players slip through the cracks but even though we missed them during Day 1, doesn't mean we're making the same mistake on Day 2. These three players all come back pacing their tables, with a few in the middle of some tough lineups.

New York's Matthew Costanzo returns for Day 2 over the 425,000 chip mark but with tons of big stacks and tough opponents on Table 48. Kat Khaterzai returns below 350,000, while Patrick Jordan and David Novak come back above that number. Andy Santiago is the biggest of that bunch though, as the Bensalem native is behind over 400,000.

Daniel Sparacino also comes back with over 400,000 but he's not even the biggest stack at his Day 2 starting table. That honor belongs to Couliang Chen, who made a deep run in last week's 300 event, meaning that Sparacino and the rest of Table 52 will have to compete with an over 600,000 chip stack and some momentum.
Luckily for Christopher Caruso, his Table 70 lineup will break before the money bubble bursts but until then, the Maryland grinder will have to compete with a very experienced lineup. Chris McNally is to Caruso's right and across the table sit Lisa Pickell and Joe 'Worm' Palma. All three have made final table runs over the last year at Parx, with Palma doing so on a seemingly series by series basis.

UK vs US Roulette

English vs. American Roulette – Key Differences

English Roulette always offer better odds for identical bets.
English Roulette always offer better odds for identical bets.
Okay, you’re an American wondering around the casinos of London and you see English roulette tables. You also notice that the subdued British casinos have American roulette tables as well.
You wonder, “Which version shall I play?”
Okay, you’re an Englishman wondering around the casinos of Las Vegas and you see American roulette tables. You also notice that the giant football-field-sized casinos have English roulette tables as well.
You wonder,” Which version shall I play?”
Well, let’s first be the American in London.
First thing you notice is that the pretty and handsome dealers on the English roulette games all have such charming British accents.
Second thing you notice is that the pretty and handsome dealers on the American roulette games have the same British accents.
So, I guess you’ll have to nullify the accent-difference in making your decision.
Third thing you notice on the English roulette layout is that there is a strange ovular number pattern representing types of bets that have pretty French names, such as les orphelins, tiers du cylindre and voisins de zero.
You get more interested, even excited, when you learn that the oval is called “the racetrack” in plain old English.
But the problem is you never heard of any of these bets and you have no idea how they work and don’t want to go through the trouble of asking those dealers with the nice accents to explain it to you.
But there is one difference you notice on the layout that seems very comprehensible:
The English roulette wheel and corresponding layout have only one green zero, not the other green double-zero you’re so used to seeing on your roulette tables back home in America. It immediately hits you that this has to be important.
Now, let’s be the Englishman in Las Vegas.
First thing you notice is that the crowds of people both playing and watching the roulette tables are making lots of noise and behaving with much less class than your compatriot gamblers back home in London.
Second thing you notice is that the dealers speak with a variety of American accents, none of which sound pleasing to you. And many of them have an unkempt appearance as well.
But the third thing you notice really makes the difference, and you realize it instantly:
These American roulette wheels have zero and double-zero while the English wheels back home in jolly old London have just the single zero.
That seals the deal for you.
So after all this back and forth about the differences between English and American roulette, both you, the American, and you, the Englishman, are going to choose to play English roulette.
Can you guess why?
Of course you can…it’s blaringly obvious.
It’s all about that second zero, or I should say “double-zero.”
Since payoffs are identical in both versions of roulette, the English version offers all gamblers, no matter which country they come from, better odds with each identical bet—much better odds.
If you take both versions of roulette in their entirety, you will find that the overall casino advantage in American roulette is 5.26% and that the overall casino advantage in English roulette is just 2.70%.
This means that the American casinos have practically twice the edge against you that English casinos do. And it’s all because of the double-zero.
So all you American and English roulette players—it’s time to join forces and go play English roulette!
And another great thing about English roulette is not only that you can find it both in Great Britain and the US, but as well in practically every major casino in the world that offers roulette!

Can Live Online Blackjack

Can Live Online Blackjack Be Beaten by Counting Cards or any other Advantage-Play Technique?

For a half-century now we’ve known that the other version of “live blackjack,” the one played in real brick and mortar casinos with real dealers in the flesh and not streamed ones, is extremely vulnerable tocard-counting and various other forms of play that give the blackjack player an advantage against the house.
Besides card-counting, the most popular methods of advantage-play are shuffle-tracking, ace-tracking and steering, hole-carding, and most recently edge-sorting.
All these methods take advantage of faults relating to the dealer or the equipment used in the game, mainly the cards.
A typical blackjack-dealer fault would be giving off a “tell” when peaking underneath an ace to see if the hole-card is a ten-value card that would make blackjack. Many dealers present physical manifestations, some as minute as a slight facial twitch, that may indicate whether the hold-card is good for a pat hand or that a hit is needed.
Another dealer fault might be insufficient card shuffling.
Faults relating to the equipment are most common with the cards.
When they become worn, their back designs at the edges tend to discolor just enough for sharp players to notice the difference from other cards. Being able to read compromised card-backs and use that information for betting and strategy purposes is called edge-sorting, and it has become a very effective way for advantage players to make money in brick and mortar casinos.

But what about live online blackjack? Can these same advantage plays work?

At first glance, you would think there are some card-counting and advantage-play opportunities in the live online blackjack world. That’s because the game itself is dealt by a real dealer on a real table using real cards and a dealing shoe, in spite of the betting and pay-offs still being handled by online software.

So can you count cards playing live blackjack?

Yes, you can use whatever card-counting method you choose and apply it just as you would in brick and mortar casinos. But unfortunately, practically all live online blackjack games have its dealers dealing 50%–or less–of the cards in the shoe, which makes it very difficult to ever obtain a meaningful card-counting advantage.
So unless you can find a live online casino with a game out there with a dealer dealing much deeper into the deck, you might as well forget counting the cards.

But can you shuffle-track and follow clumps of tens mixed in with aces at the live online blackjack table?

You can do that too, but unfortunately another systematic problem prevents you from doing that with any promise of financial gain: some live online blackjack games are replacing card shoes that have just been dealt with other card shoes loaded with cards that have been shuffled off camera. Other games shuffle the cards with the proper steps to nullify tracking.
And even if such were not the case, you would still not be able to cut and steer cards to your upcoming hands at the top of a new shoe.

Martingale and Roulette….The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Martingale and Roulette….The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Martingale is a negative progression system where you double your bet everyt ime you lose.
Martingale is a negative progression system where you double your bet every time you lose.
If any game in the history of casino gambling has attracted betting systems throughout the centuries, it certainly is roulette. And not surprisingly, more than half of them are negative progressive systemswhere the gambler accepts the fact he will lose more than 50% of the spins but nevertheless believes he can still come out ahead in the long run.
Any “negative progression” system is based on the long run of events, just like positive progression systems are. The difference is that the negative progression system takes faith that the long run will never be too negative.
The most famous of these negative systems used at roulette is called the Martingale system. Born in the heyday of the famed Le Grand Casino in Monte Carlo, where barons, dukes and earls came from all over Europe to take their chances, the Martingale is used by the everyman of today.

Its Strategy is as Easy as it is to Say “Martingale.”

You start off with one unit. You place it on a bet having the closest to a 50% chance of winning as possible. In roulette you have six choices: odd/even/ red/black/ 1thru 18/ and 19 thru 36. Each of these bets on a single-zero (0) roulette wheel has a 48.6% chance of winning.
If your first bet wins, you take down the profit of one unit and bet one unit again. If it loses you double your bet to two units. If that second bet wins you take down three units and return to a one-unit bet. If it loses you double up again to a four-unit bet.
In short, the Martingale has you double your bet every time you lose and return to one unit every time you win. Doing so will render a profit of one unit after each winning spin.

Does it Work?

That depends on how lucky you are, how much money you have, where you play and what the betting limits are.
I will say this, though: Martingale works more than 99% of the time!

That’s the Good.

The bad is the one time in a hundred you lose. Since you’re doubling your bet after every losing outcome, you’re betting a fortune before you know it.
For instance, you start out with a $5 bet on your favorite color red. You’re looking to earn $5 after every winning bet.
But you lose seven spins in a row and you’re suddenly down $635. The eighth bet in the system calls for $640—and that’s just to recoup a $5 win.
Lose that bet and now you must risk $1,280 to win $5!
Getting scary?
Lose that bet and you must bet $2, 560—to win five lousy dollars!
It’s getting insane now and you’re really sweating.

The Ugly.

You’ve lost nine consecutive spins and are down $2,555. You reach into your pocket and recklessly grab all the $100 bills left inside. You’re not even sure you have enough to make the system-required $2,560 bet. But you do and you nervously throw the bills on the layout.
But then suddenly the dealer admonishes you with the words, “I’m sorry, the maximum bet at this table is $2,000.”
So what do you do?
You go to another table that has a higher limit or even another casino if you have to.
You make the $2,560 bet.
You lose. You’ve now lost ten spins in a row.
You desperately run to the highest-limit casino in town and bet $5,120, still trying to come out $5 ahead for the whole ordeal, and you can’t even believe you started this!

The Ugliest.

You’re broke! That’s because you lost your eleventh spin in a row.
And the real killer is you learn that the last spin on the wheel you’d just left came out red! Had you stayed there and placed your eleventh bet, you would have bailed out and been up $5 instead of down $10,240 and broke.
Well?
The bleak scenario I just created does not happen often, but if you play long enough it will. I’ve heard stories of gamblers getting wiped out with Martingale without ever winning their first one-unit bet.
On the other hand, you can get lucky and play every day for a year, winning four or five units each day without ever getting near losing ten or eleven spins in a row.
But remember, you’re constrained by both bankroll and betting limits. In a perfect roulette world where you could bet a billion dollars and the casino would accept it, you might be able to go on winning forever with Martingale.
